Final here we come...

Leigh Genesis U14 Pheonix Girls Entertained Urmston Meds Girls U14 in the SMGL Plate cup Semi Final just last weekend. Pheonix Girls were looking to book a place in the final with this being their first season as a team.

Pheonix started the first half quite nervy unable to keep possession, on the stroke of 10 minutes into the game Pheonix keeper Emily came off her line to make a challenge to get the ball from the Urmston striker who was clear on goal. In a controversial decision the referee deemed it to be a dangerous challenge and awarded Urmston an early penalty. Pheonix Keeper Emily held her nerve and redeemed herself by making an excellent save to keep the scores at 0-0!
It was a very close encounter and towards the end of first half the Pheonix manager made a change sending on Charlotte Francis the Pheonix striker with one clear message "Go and get us a goal". After being on the field for 2 minutes Charlotte did exactly that and put Pheonix
1-0 up heading into half time!

The Second half began with the game again being a cagey afair with several free kicks for urmston on the edge of the box being the only chances of the half so far. Pheonix keeper Emily making some top saves to keep the score at 1-0 Pheonix!
With the game coming into its final minutes Pheonix looked set for the final. This was then made certain when the referee awarded pheonix a penalty in the last few seconds of the game. Phoenix Captain Maddison hands the penalty over to Rachel to secure a place in the final. The urmston keeper did her best to put Rachel off but Rachel was not fazed by this strategy and puts it away giving Pheonix a 2-0 lead and a place in the plate cup final!

We caught up with Manager Paul Fletcher after the game who only had this to say "Final here we come"!

what an achievement for the Girls in their first season as a team. A huge well done to all the players and coaches Paul and Amanda, good luck in the final, bring it home girls!!
