Leigh Genesis
History 3 of 4

3. Leigh Genesis

In June 2008 the club was renamed Leigh Genesis to signify a "new beginning" ahead of it's move to the Leigh Sports Village, changing the club colours from red and white stripes to a home kit of white shirt with black trim, black shorts and black short, while the away kit was chosen as all blue with a white trim.

In October 2008, the clubs chairman Dominic Speakman announced his departure from the club. Genesis had been due to move into the new Leigh Sports Village Stadium (LSV) but continuing delays and unrealistic pricing, in the end cost the club. With the rising losses, and lack of home ground Speakman withdrew his financial backing from the club.

Many of the club's playing and off-field staff offered to remain at the club on a voluntary basis, but manager Steve Bleasdale resigned the following week, and shortly afterwards returned to former club Chester City as assistant manager. Reserve team coach Lee Merricks was appointed the club's new manager, and guiding his young side to several memorable results, including a 4-2 victory at Gigg Lane against FC United of Manchester on 14th February 2009.

On 23rd March 2009 the club appointed former Manchester City and Blackburn Rovers midfielder Garry Flitcroft as it's new manager, assisted by former City team mate Mike Quigley, as well as announcing that the team would be playing at the Leigh Sports Village with immediate effect.

After finishing in 6th position, one place outside of the promotion play-offs, in the UniBond League Division One North during 2009/2010, manager Garry Flitcroft and several players departed the club to join local rivals Chorley.

Unfortunately, the season was again over-shadowed by off-field events, with an agreement unable to be reached to secure a long-term tenancy at the Leigh Sports Village Stadium and as such again seeing home games being forced to be switched to alternative venues at short notice.

In the summer of 2010, the club left the Leigh Sports Village Stadium and entered in to a groundshare agreement at Crilly Park with North West Counties Premier Division neighbours Atherton Laburnum Rovers for the 2010/2011 season.

Genesis appointed former player Mark Maddox, previously manager with Formby, as their new manager, with veteran midfielder Andy Heald was installed as player-coach. July 2010 saw Gary Scott, another ex-Leigh player and former Altrincham team mate of Maddox's, appointed as assistant manager and Richard Ward as a coaching assistant.

Maddox left the club in December 2010 and was replaced by Alan Kershaw, who had previously been in charge of the Genesis Youth team, with existing player/coach Andy Heald being joined by fellow Leigh veteran Steve Brockley on the coaching staff.

On 2 June 2011, Leigh Genesis FC officially announced that it would not be joining the North West Counties League (Level 9) despite being relegated from the Northern Premier League Division One North (Level 8). Leigh Genesis secretary Mary Croasdale stated:

... we do not have a home ground and have been ground sharing for the last year at Crilly Park, home of Atherton LR. It is with much sadness and regret that we confirm that due to our lack of permanent facility we will not be applying for membership with the North West Counties League and taking an option further down the football ladder as appropriate for the playing facility we will have available’

"The board felt that any future senior teams would benefit from the support of the separately affiliated and organised club "Leigh Genesis Juniors"

Rob Atherton, Junior Secretary, became the link between the outgoing board and the junior section.

In 2012 the juniors changed their name to "Leigh Genesis" and created a senior team from their successful U20`s side to enter the South Lancs Counties Football League for the start of the 2012-13 season. The team lead by a management team of Liam Peers, David Wright & Tom Sheldon cruised to the division 1 title winning the leagues leading goal scorer in Chad Whyte and Liam picking up the manager of the season award.

With this success behind them 2013-14 saw them move into the premier division and the creation of a new reserve team playing in division 2 under Phil Pilkington."

The season proved a milestone for the club with the 1st team finishing runners up in the premier league and winning the bill heyes memorial cup.

2014-15 saw a restructure of the senior section bringing the U17s and the veterans under the arm of manager Liam peers assisted by Tom Sheldon, Mike Whyte, Lee Derbyshire and Shaun Regan groomed the 1st team and reserve team into one squad and Liam peers keeping close to the U17s and Veterans.

The first team once again came runners up in the premier league, pipped at the post by goal difference. The reserves competed well and ended the season in mid table respectively. Off the field the club won 4 major community awards as "Club of the Year" 1st was the Believe Wigan Sports Awards Followed by the Greater Manchester sports awards. The Lancashire FA Charter standard community club of the year award was followed by the regional award for the North West of England. A truly Amazing season recognising high standards of operation and increasing participation.

2015-16 marked a decline in the fortunes of the 1st team who ended up mid table in the Premier division. Loss of players, stronger opposition and internal disputes came to a head with the resignation of Liam Peers at the end of the season. The Reserves after a super start faded alarmingly and just avoided relegation from division 2.
In contrast the emerging force of the U17s saw Alpha win the BBDFL league and cup double and Cosmos with the Warrington League Alf Holt Trophy. U17 Alpha also took the Clubs team of the season title. In addition many U17s played for the 1st and Reserves throughout the season and the future vision was seen as retaining the loyal and experienced players and bringing through the youth.

As the older youth players matured Rob Atherton took the reigns of First Team Manager in 2016-17 in order to gel the established first team players with the youth. Mike Whyte continued as Reserves Ream Manager.
The First team still could not match the top sides in the Premier Division and ended up just above the bottom 2 but Steve Yates was chosen as the Divisions player of the season.
The Reserves also finished just above the relegation spots and Mike won the Clubs Outstanding Contribution Award for his massive hard work and loyalty over 10 years.

The move to Lowton required Rob to focus on Club business and Mike took over as First Team Manager and Lee Cooper Reserves in season 2017-18.
It was felt that a drop down to division 1 would give the Senior Section much needed breathing space and this was a good move. The First team won Division 1 and celebrated with Chad Whyte winning the top goalscorer and Nathan Ogden player of the season.
Unfortunately a combination of not enough players, subscription debt and player and team fines lead to the Reserves being folded two thirds through the season.

Season 2018-19 once again proved to be a step too far and Mike Whyte had a devil of a job keeping the team motivated during the first part of the season when results were not going their way. However the turn of the year saw a Partnership Agreement with Manchester League Club Leigh Athletic and this injected a number of good players into the team that allowed Genesis to finish the season. Mike decided to put away his managers file but is still involved in the club in an admin role.
The partnership with Leigh Athletic moved on at pace during the summer months with the appointment of Craig Dean as Open Age Manager for both clubs and with Kevin Hough in a Team Official role on match days. A request was made to the South Lancs League to drop down to division 2 as the transition of players meant the team needed some breathing space in order to evolve in their own way.

"This proved to be a smart move and despite narrowly losing their first 3 games they then won their next 6 and moved into the Charity Cup semi final and finished in 4th place before Covid 19 surfaced & stopped the season in its tracks.
The partnership with Leigh Athletic proved to be a huge success with Rob Atherton gaining the Club Charter Standard Status, free equipment, Grant funding, and turning round a significant start of season debt into a significant end of season surplus. Craig Dean fully supported the project and created a good club spirit and brought about a more disciplined approach whilst at the same time gaining the respect of many stalwart Athletic long term members. Lee Darbyshire set training alight with some superb sessions which many within the club said that they were the best they had ever seen. This success resulted in Leigh Athletic joining Leigh Genesis and becoming an important part of the club and like Horwich RMI and Leigh RMI their history will be recorded on the clubs website and remembered for a long time".
